What is an Interstitial Ad?

It’s pretty simple: interstitial ads are full-screen ads, generally placed between standard interactions that users have with the websites, apps, and/or games they use.

Users may see interstitials between levels of their favorite mobile game, for example. Or when transitioning from one article to another inside a beloved news app. When the interstitial runs, it will engulf the entirety of the user’s screen, practically forcing them to pay attention to it.

Interstitial Ads vs Banner Ads

These facts help differentiate interstitial ads from other ad units, like banner ads, which generally run on the top or bottom of a users screen, while they use an app or website.

Interstitial ads are important ad units because they encourage user engagement and participation. This often results in higher eCPMs for those that use them.
